Sanctuary of the Great Gods in Samothraki Island
Athens 2004 Olympic Games Pin
Samothrace (also Samothraki) is a Greek island in the northern Aegean Sea. It is a municipality within the Evros regional unit of Thrace. Its main industries are fishing and tourism. Resources on the island include granite and basalt. Samothrace is one of the most rugged Greek islands, with Mt. Saos and its tip Fengari rising to 1,611 m.
The Samothraki Temple Complex, known as the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, is one of the principal Pan-Hellenic religious sanctuaries, located on the island of Samothrace within the larger Thrace. Built immediately to the west of the ramparts of the city of Samothrace, it was nonetheless independent, as attested to by the dispatch of city ambassadors during festivals.
